Former star Bethany Rogers claims she lost herself to drugs and ended up in an abusive relationship after she was portrayed as a ‘monster’ on the show.

The ex contestant, now 26, appeared on the first series in 2015 as a late arrival when she says she was told to stir the pot by producers.

She was kicked off the programme after 10 days and recalls turning her phone on to vile messages and death threats from some viewers, and she later turned to drugs in a bid to feel comfortable in her own skin.

Tough time: Former Love Island star Bethany Rogers, 26, claims she lost herself to drugs and ended up in an abusive relationship after she was portrayed as a ‘monster’ on the show

The mother-of-one says she lost her ‘self worth’ due to the relentless trolling and became addicted to ketamine.

She was acquitted of money laundering in a case that lasted four years, concluding at Bradford Magistrates Court last week where she was given an absolute discharge on one remaining count of possessing 134mg of ketamine.

Bethany told The Sun: ‘I quickly realised this show is nothing to do with finding love. They were just pitting the Islanders against each other.

‘Producers would come in everyday and direct us to talk to a certain person – to stir the pot. They were manipulating us to fit their narrative. But everything shown of me was negative and aggressive.’

She entered the villa on day 14 and was dumped from the island 10 days later, and says she was inundated with ‘so much trolling and malicious remarks, even death threats’ online when she turned on her phone once off camera.

Bethany added: ‘I was literally shocked when I watched the show and saw how I’d been portrayed. They’d made me out to be so aggressive.’

A spokesperson for Love Island told MailOnline: ‘This is not a version of events we recognise.

‘As with all Islanders, Bethany was offered aftercare, both at the time and in the years since her appearance.

‘Because of medical confidentiality, we do not comment on individuals’ duty of care, but our welfare protocols are widely publicised and we have a robust set of measures in place to ensure support before, during and after filming is prioritised.’

Bethany performed as a dancer and fire breather in and around Leeds before her time on the show and was approached on Facebook by producers who asked her to audition.

Addiction: The mother-of-one says she lost her ‘self worth’ due to the relentless trolling and became addicted to ketamine

She jumped at the chance thinking it would further her career but did not make the original line-up.

Instead, she was flown out to the villa part way through the series as a late arrival on the show.

She recalls how she was told: ‘You know what you’ve got to do,’ by show staff before she was put in the villa late at night after the Islanders had spent the evening drinking.

Bethany claims producers instructed her who to talk to every day so she would fit in with their narrative.

She added that while she got on well with her fellow Islanders and left on good terms, the footage shown of her on television was ‘negative and aggressive’.

Bethany later got into a relationship with a man who she claims was violent towards her.

While with him she ended up on money laundering charges in 2019 after she was accused of jointly buying an Audi A3 using £16,500 criminal money.

She says he beat her over the course of a year and eventually she ran and left the relationship.

Bethany says police wanted to press charges against him for domestic violence but she just wanted to get away from him so didn’t go through with it.

In 2018, despite having split from her ex, she was arrested alongside him on money laundering charges and turned to drugs deal with the stress.

After giving birth to a little girl she realised she needed help and checked herself into rehab.

All charges against her were dropped in 2020 and her case concluded last week.

She is now studying psychology at Bradford University and hopes to help other people who have suffered trauma.
